Camp Challenge
Junior/Senior Summer Christian Camp
When: First Full Week in June
HISTORY
Challenge Christian Camp began in the summer of 1984 under the name of Camp "Son" Shine. Camp "Son" Shine
filled a need recognized by Pastor Vitosky of Newton, Pastor Carson Johnson of Abilene, and Pastor Schoneweis of
Clay Center.
It all started with a phone call; "Here's what we can do." "OK, let's do it." And the Lord blessed.
The first Director, Pastor Ron Vitosky, answered a call to a Texas church and handed the director
responsibilities to Pastor Dale Heffernan of Midland Baptist Church of Wichita. Pastor Heffernan
is now Dr. Heffernan, having written his thesis on the camp ministry.
PHILOSOPHY
Camp Challenge stands without apology for the old-time Gospel, for the strong preaching of the Bible, for high
standards of living, and for personal separation. These goals may not be popular, but they are biblical.
Young people respond to God's Word in a camp setting away from TV, contemporary music, and other pressures.
Activities filling the day include swimming, canoeing, organized recreation, then along with Bible memory,
quizzing, teaching and preaching by nationally known evangelists who zero in on the spiritual needs of young people today.
This is a cutting-edge camp that brings campers back year after year, many returning as counselors in their
college and career years.
The pastors and their wives are in the middle of this camp, from the kitchen, to the bank, to the energizing of
team competition and hilarious skit activity. If you don't have a good sense of humor, you will never fit in at
this camp. Interaction between all age levels is a hallmark. No one is left out.
PURPOSE
The Purpose of this camp is to be an arm of the local church, utilizing the camp setting to evangelize and edify
to the glory of God. The rustic-modern facilities of Camp Mennoscah on the banks of the South Fork of the
Ninnescah River near Murdock, Kansas have served as the Camp site.
RESULTS
Yes, the results have been amazing and blessed of God, and only to His glory. Scores of campers have been
saved and united with local churches. Many have gone on to higher Christian education and ministry preparation.
Several are in full-time Christian service as a result of the spiritual impact of Challenge Christian Camp.
