What does the Bible say about salvation?

Our Bibles give more than one term for being saved.

  • Saved
  • Born Again
  • Salvation
  • Regeneration
  • Reconciliation
  • Redemption

Basically these terms are used for the same experience.

What happens when you are saved?

  • You become aware of your need.
  • You hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ promising to meet that need.
  • The Gospel (Good News) is believed and acted upon by you.
  • You turn (repent) from your sinful way of life and turn to Jesus as Saviour and Lord and receive forgiveness of sins committed.
  • You are received by God as an adopted Child by grace because of Jesus finished work on the cross.
  • You receive the gift of eternal life.
  • You receive the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit. This is a life changing event!

You must remember that salvation is of the Lord. It is a supernatural miracle performed by God because He loves you and has provided salvation for you by sending Jesus to die for you on the cross. When you come as a needy sinner to God, Who loves you, you come by faith, with an imperfect knowledge. Some of these things will be clear before you are saved, and some of these things will become clear after you are saved, and you submit to God and His Word, the Bible.

It is encouraging to realize that you are not saved by what you bring to God, but that you come to God and receive what He has already provided for you.

How can you be saved?

Thomas, Jesus' disciple, put this question to Jesus the night before His crucifixion.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:5-6

Since Jesus is the Way to the Father, How do you get to Jesus? Take the "Roman's Road."

The Romans Road to Salvation

The book of Romans in our Bibles presents clear directions to salvation. Let's open our Bibles and mark some verses that will guide you in the Way of salvation.

Your starting point

You are a sinner.

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
Their feet are swift to shed blood:
Destruction and misery are in their ways:
And the way of peace have they not known:
There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:10-23

These verses show us our condition (under the Law) and need of salvation and forgiveness of sin.

Next, the wages of your sin is death.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23

This verse shows us that death is the penalty for being a sinner and for our sins committed. Now we need Someone worthy of paying the penalty of sin.

Your penalty (wages) of sin is paid.

But God commendeth (demonstrated) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

Jesus is the "Way" back to God. This is salvation from sin.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9-10

Ask (pray) for salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 10:13

Now call on the Lord to be saved!

Pray a similar prayer like this, or use this prayer.

Dear Father I come to you as a sinner in need of the salvation which You provided for me, when Jesus died in my place on the cross. Save me for Jesus sake, forgive all of my sin, and give me eternal life. Receive me as Your child, give me the gift of the Holy Spirit, and come into my life and take control of my life. Give me the assurance of salvation by Your Word the Bible and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in my life. Thank You Father, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Now tell someone and invite someone else to Jesus.
